In 1923 a devestating fire that destroyed the Henry Marea General Store, people in the Town of Maine
to realize the need for an offical Fire Department. On October 27, 1923 the by-laws of the "Nanticoke
Valley Fire Company" were accepted and 22 men were voted into membership. In 1930 the fire company
purchased a 1924 Chevrolet for $44.00, which is on display at the fire station today. In 1935 Department
under went some reorganization in order to raise taxes to support operations. The Maine Fire Department
was officially created and divided into fire protection districts by this reorganization. In 1946 the
first new piece of apparatus was deliviered to the Department, a 1946 John Bean High Pressure truck on
a 1946 Dodge Chassis. As time passed th Maine Fire Department organized and put into service a Fire
Police squad. This group of people were responsible for protecting a fire scene until the chief decided
there was no more emergency and turned the property back over to the owner.

In 1951 The Fire Department purchased land on Mcgregor Av and moved into its current location. In 1961
the Maine Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary was formed. Their responsibilities were to handle radio equipment
at the station during emergencies and to provide food to firefighters operating on emergencies. In 1973
the Maine Emergency Ambulance Squad was formed. Maine Ambulance member Faye tyler helped pioneer the
Emergency Medical Technician as it is known today in New York and across the Country.

Today The Maine Fire Department has evolved into a cutting edge Fire Department. It was one of the first
in Broome County to establish a F.A.S.T. team, to assist firefighters who have an emergency while
operating in an emergency situation. With the current base of modern equipment and a strong past, the
Maine Fire Department is ready to move into the future.
