Tractor Trailer Rollover

On November 27, 2007, Maine Fire was dispatched to assist Glen Aubrey Fire with Rescue 33-6 for a tractor trailer rollover with entrapment on Knapp Road in the Town of Nanticoke . While enroute, a nearby off duty law enforcement officer arrived on the scene and reported “one victim stuck in the vehicle.” Rescue 33-6 arrived moments later and found the victim to be in much worse condition than previously reported and immediately called for a 2nd rescue to further assist in the extrication. Lieutenant (Lt.) Kyle Pomeroy and firefighter (f.f) Brett Neely immediately began the extrication with Chief Dave Silverstein assisting as the apparatus operator. Engine-Rescue 64-3 from Castle Creek Fire arrived as Lt. Pomeroy and f.f. Neely were finishing the extrication. Shortly thereafter, a Guthrie Air helicopter enroute from Sayre, Pa. landed at the scene to assist with the patient transport. Once extricated, the victim was packaged and immediately loaded into the awaiting helicopter. The incident involved several hazards including a hydraulic fluid, oil, and diesel fuel spill from the truck. In addition, nearly all 8,500 gallons of the treated wastewater being transported was lost due to the damage sustained to the trailer during the crash. Maine Fire remained on the scene a few more hours to assist in the difficult removal of the truck and trailer. Later on, the driver was visited in the hospital by f.f. Neely and was doing well but resting with a punctured lung, separated shoulder, broken ribs, and numerous lacerations. He told f.f. Neely that one of the best moments of his life was going from the complete darkness inside the crushed cab, to seeing the light as Maine firefighters removed the roof and extricated him.
