| Maine Fire assisted Newark Valley at a House Fire - 2/05/2009 |
Early Thursday morning, Maine Fire was toned out to assist Newark Valley on a working structure fire on Sherry Lipe Rd.
Crews responded on Pumper Tanker 33-1 and Rescue 33-6. We arrived to find the rear addition of the two story farmhouse
engulfed in flames. Departments from both Tioga and Broome County battled not only the fire, but also the strong wind
gusts and below zero temperatures for hours, well into the afternoon. The fire, which was caused by an electrical short
that started in the wood shed, ripped through the rear of the home and got into the walls and attic of the home. After
an exhausting couple hours, the fire was brought under control and crews began overhaul. Tragically, most of the home
had been lost to either fire or water damage. Weather became a contributing factor as water lines, equipment, gear, and
even apparatus froze solid. Crews responded from Newark Valley, Owego, Maine, Campville, West Corners, Weltonville,
Berkshire, Union Center, Tioga Communications, Berkshire Ambulance, and Owego Ambulance. Also assisting at the scene was
the Newark Valley Highway Department & the Newark Valley Bus Garage.
