Maine Fire Responds to a Deadly Crash - 1/10/2009

Early Saturday afternoon, during a fierce winter blizzard, Maine Fire responded to a two car MVA with multiple victims and confirmed entrapment. Minutes later, 33-A and Rescue 33-6 arrived on the scene, which was just short of the East Maine Road & Rt 26 intersection. What they arrived at, was nothing less then a scene of absolute tragedy. The car was headed Northbound on Rt 26 when the driver lost control, due to road conditons, and went into the southbound lane where he was struck on the passenger side by an oncoming van. Both occupants of the van were able to self extricate. The passenger of the van, a child, had unknown internal injuries and the driver of the van sustained minor injury, both were transported to the hospital. The passenger of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. Crews worked quickly to extricate the driver of the car by cutting both the door and the roof from the vehicle. The driver was the transported immediately from the scene with serious life threatening injuries. Also on the scene was Maine ambulance and Superior ambulance. NYSDOT assisted along with Union Center Fire in closing down rt 26 until the scene was secured.
