| Lothar Auto Fire |
On Monday late afternoon, Maine Fire was dispatched, along with both Whitney Point and Choconut Center fire,
as Northern Broome Fast Team to assist Chenango Fire at Lothar Auto located on Upper Front Street. While in
route to the scene with rescue 33-6, a dark header of heavy smoke could be seen as far away as Airport Rd.
We arrived on the scene to find hundreds of bystanders watching as flames shot up into the air. We immediately
packed up and went to staging where half the crew was put in place as FAST and the other half was put to work
extenguishing the blaze, which consumed both the garage and the neighboring house, as well as numerous cars in
the lot. Crews from throughout Broome County worked well into the night to bring the blaze under control and
put out hot spots. We were released after a few hours as mutual aid was no longer required. The fire was
accidently caused by employees of Lothar Auto trying to free a gas tank from a car using a torch. No one was
injured from the fire.
