PORT CRANE, N.Y. - Two days before the fifth anniversary of 9/11, Broome County honored the fire and
EMS workers who helped out at Ground Zero and remembered those who perished in the attacks. Broome County
sent over 100 first responders, many of who were in attendance.
The event was held as part of the Fire Expo at the Port Crane fire station. The service began with a
posting of the colors and lying of a wreath by the Maine Fire Department Honor Guard. The Broome County
Celtic Pipes and Drums played "Amazing Grace". The service included speeches from Jerry Marinich, who
responded to Ground Zero and is the chairman of the county's 9/11 Memorial Committee, and a proclamation
from Attorney General Eliot Spitzer which was read by Assistant Attorney General Dennis McCabe.
Broome County Firefighters Association President Robert O. Brady presented pins to responders and thanked
them for their efforts. The services concluded with the singing of "God Bless America", a closing prayer
by Pastor John Treischman, and a fly-over by a STAT MedEvac helicopter.
In May, ground was broken for a 9/11 Memorial outside Binghamton City Hall. The estimated cost of the
memorial exceeds $300,000. However, the Steering Committee has secured well over $200,000 of donations
from a range of generous community sponsors.
Some of the materials and all of the labor are being provided at no cost. Nevertheless, the Steering
Committee must still raise approximately $80,000 to cover the cost of certain materials, particularly
the bronze dome at the foot of the steel.
The memorial was designed and will be constructed almost entirely by volunteers. Those wishing to
contributed can mail their donation payable to "The 9/11 Memorial in the City of Binghamton", 38 Hawley
Street, Binghamton, NY 13901.
